Feeling overwhelmed trying to keep your Chicago home sparkling while juggling a busy schedule? You’re not alone. Between work, family, and the hustle of city life, finding time for a deep cleaning help session can feel impossible. But sometimes, the secret to a fresh-feeling space isn’t just about scrubbing—it’s about setting the right mood with amazing, affordable lighting. A cozy, well-lit home feels cleaner, calmer, and more inviting, even before you pick up a sponge. Let’s explore some easy, budget-friendly lighting tricks that can instantly transform your apartment or house, making it a sanctuary you love to come home to.

Great lighting is everything. It can turn a dull room into a warm, welcoming retreat and make your entire space feel more cared for and clean. The best part? You don’t need a big budget or any special skills. Whether you own your home or are renting your apartment cleaning routine, these ideas are for you.

Indoor Lighting Magic: Create Instant Ambiance

Your body naturally responds to light. Bright overhead lights can feel harsh, especially in the evening, while warm, glowing mood lighting helps you calm down and unwind. Creating this vibe is easier than you think.

1. Plug-In Wonders: No Wiring Required

Start simple with plugin nightlight candles. These mini candles (often around $6) gradually glow when the room dims, offering a little moment of affordable luxury. For an even more budget-friendly option, grab a Dollar Tree nightlight and a picture frame. Use adhesive dots or glue to attach the frame over the light—it will glow beautifully from behind. It’s a super cool, easy idea that warms up any corner.

Looking for more permanent-feeling light without the hassle? Plugin wall sconces are a game-changer. I love book sconces that look like old leather-bound novels but are actually plug-in lights. They add instant antique library vibes to any bookshelf. For a focused glow, plugin wall lights on a swivel are perfect for spotlighting art, ceramics, or your favorite plants. Just use command strips to hang them—no holes, no fuss.

2. Transform Builder-Grade Lights

Do you have a dated or distracting recessed can light ruining your room’s vibe? A can light conversion kit is your secret weapon. You can find these affordably online. The kit installs right into the existing can, allowing you to hang a beautiful pendant light without an electrician. You go from builder-grade to custom, high-end lighting in minutes. This is a perfect shortcut for renters or non-DIYers who want a elevated look.

3. Smart & Simple Accent Lights

Small touches make a huge difference. Consider these easy adds:

  • Rechargeable Picture Lights: Ditch battery-operated versions for rechargeable ones. They clip over artwork, offer different color temperatures (warm light is cozier!), and make your decor pop.
  • Touch Lights & DIY Lamps: Dollar Tree’s puck lights or touch lights are incredibly versatile. Stick one inside a thrifted candlestick, top it with a $1 lampshade, and you have a charming, plug-free table lamp. They’re also perfect for inside cabinets or drawers.
  • Motion-Activated Lights: Place these inside pantries, under sinks, or in dark drawers. They conserve energy and provide light exactly when you need it, making every part of your home more functional and inviting.

Outdoor Glow: Extend the Comfort Outside

Don’t neglect your outdoor spaces! Great exterior lighting makes your home feel larger, safer, and more luxurious.

1. Solar Solutions for Pathways & Porches

Traditional solar lights are great, but have you seen flat solar lights? They’re inconspicuous, perfect for lining walkways, and hold a charge for a long time. For about $2.50 each, they provide just the right amount of gentle light. I also love placing them in the corners of a porch for gorgeous uplighting.

Solar lanterns are another must-try. When they turn on at dusk, the light cascades over their surface, creating beautiful patterns. They look incredible on a porch or patio. Dollar Tree and online retailers often have great options.

2. Elevated Dollar Store Finds

Dollar Tree has seriously upped its lighting game. Look for:

  • Solar Post Cap Lights: Fit them on fence posts for a polished look.
  • Glass Butterfly Jars: Take the base off a $1.50 solar light and place it inside one of these pretty jars for stunning patio decor.
  • Directional Uplighting: A magnetic, rechargeable light for about $7. Use it to highlight a tree or garden art.
  • Flame Glow Lights: These solar-powered lights look like they have a real flame inside. Place them in urns or pots for a high-end look on a serious budget.

The Final Touch: A Truly Clean Foundation

While amazing lighting sets the mood, it shines brightest in a space that’s fundamentally clean and fresh. After you’ve set up your cozy new lights, you’ll want everything else to sparkle. That’s where a trusted Chicago cleaning company comes in. Instead of spending your weekend scrubbing, you could be enjoying your beautifully lit home.

Have you seen plugin nightlight candles? Maybe
you’ve seen nightlights before, but these actually look like mini candles, and they retail for about
$6 a piece. When the light dims, the candles gradually come on. It’s these little affordable
moments of luxury that I think make a big difference. I love this one that sort of reminds
me of a chandelier. It’s got the crystals with it and then the side dimmer. Both of these have
this feature and it really warms up a room and you don’t have to spend a lot to do it. Looking to
do this even more on a dime? You can grab Dollar Tree nightlights at a Dollar Tree picture frame.
All you have to do is use NanoDots or hot glue to put the picture frame on the front and it will
glow from behind. This is a super cool and really easy idea. Amazing lighting is everything. Today
I’ve got so many affordable ways to transform your home and do it fast. We’re headed to Dollar Tree.
We’ve got indoor ideas and outdoor ideas and I bet some you have never ever seen. Listen, if it makes
it to Do It on a Dime, not only is it affordable, it’s actually good. Literally no skill required.
Like out of the box, you can use these even and especially if you’re renting. So whether it’s
from Dollar Tree or beyond, I’m sharing with you the best of the best. I would love to know in
the comments which of these first three ideas is actually your favorite because I have coming up
some of the best lighting tricks I’ve ever shown, including what to do with really yucky can lights.
I’ve got you. But first, let’s go back to Dollar Tree and talk about basic solar lights for
a second. You know the ones that are $1.50. Next time you’re in store, grab one of these. And
Dollar Tree just released these beautiful glass butterfly jars. They even have a handle on them.
Take off the base of your solar light. It will fit perfectly inside. This will look incredible on a
back patio. More to come on that soon. Do you know what else Dollar Tree just brought back to stores?
Directional uplighting. This is one of my favorite finds. This comes with a base and a pole that
you can insert and it swivels on a magnet. So, if you want to put these on a tree in your
home to give some background uplighting, it looks so good. You can use it over art. This
costs just $7. And yes, it is rechargeable. Also, no batteries required. Dollar Tree is absolutely
the cheapest place to buy this product, but Amazon sells similar products for just a
couple of dollars more if you can’t find them in your store. Your body is wired to respond to
sunlight, which is especially why in the evening times, having lots of mood lighting actually
helps you calm. It helps you wind down. So, having lots of that warm glowing light is going to
help you relax. And I am all about that. Before we go outside and head to Dollar Tree, I’ve got to
talk about these incredible book sconces. Talk about adding instant mood lighting to any space.
One of my favorite renovations I’ve ever done in my home is this library area. Here was the before.
So many of you loved watching this project come to life. I painted the bookshelves a dark green and
then I DIY-customized it. This is a light and it’s plug in so no hardware required. I love the little
shade on this. I love the gold hardware and this is wood but it looks like a book. So, I got two
of these so I can put these in our bookshelves and this is going to give us the moody lighting
that we’re looking for. I am so excited to see how these look. These were Amazon finds and I have to
know if you are like me and don’t like having the overhead light on. I like having mood lights so
that way when I walk through I feel like I’m in a real true antique library. I wanted this video
to include all of the lighting that I’m truly using and still loving to this very day. But I had
to add something super cool to the ceiling. Now, you may remember I added peel and stick
wallpaper to the ceiling of our library, which I love. And we have a recessed can light
in there, which if I’m being totally honest, definitely distracts from the vibe, which is why
this next lighting upgrade had to make the video. A can light conversion kit. You can get these
really affordably on Amazon. So, basically, this goes up into the light kit, and you put
screws through these three little brackets, and it just sort of sits up in the light just
like this. With this little bulb-like piece, you take out the shell of the can light. Then,
you install the conversion kit and the bulb in the center, and then you wire in a light fixture
like normal. No electrician required. I found an amazing pendant light on Amazon that we installed
in minutes. It’s attached to a secure mount right in the can light. So, you go from builder grade
to custom high-end lighting. And I believe these little touches are exactly what make this space.
I was really excited to find this light because it was an antique look, very high quality with that
milk glass vibe. You can change the color settings to have that really rich, warm tone, and it’s less
than $100. So, if you’re renting, not a DIYer, but you still want custom lighting and thought
it was too complicated, these are your shortcuts, friends. No matter how big or small the project,
these are the types of details that make you want to stay. From $89 to just $1.50, I want to go
back to Dollar Tree for a minute because if you’re really lucky, you might find one of these
plugin wall lights. I love how these are also on a swivel and you can achieve some luxury lighting
with something super affordable. I always put command strips on the back of these. They come
in multiple colors, white, gray, and black. and you can put them up under art installations. Any
type of spotlight like this is great for art. It’s great for ceramics and it’s also great for plants,
too. These are the little touches that actually want to make you stay in your space. And speaking
of staying so cozy, and the next way to achieve that are picture lights. What’s so cool about
so many of the picture lights now is these are rechargeable. In my personal experience, I would
stay away from the battery operated ones and go with the rechargeable ones. These can come right
down. You charge them in the wall and lots of them have different color options from cool to warm
lights. You can see I have one over this picture in the back. I have these all over my house. They
make such a difference and you can do it really affordably. We have five of these throughout our
home, but I think my favorite is in our master bedroom. I have it decorated in a French theme and
I love the luxury look that it gives on a dime. And now we’ve got to head outside because some
outside lighting, especially this time of year, is some of my favorite. I love a good traditional
solar light, but have you seen flat solar lights? These are so beautiful and great for lining
walkways, and they’re super inconspicuous. These hold a charge for a very long time. They
ring in at about $2.50 each, and they come with a little stake to really easily put them in
the ground. I put these all down my walkways, and the lighting at night is just right. One of
my personal favorite things to do is to put these in corners of your porch. It’s going to give you
that gorgeous uplighting, especially at night. And Dollar Tree and Amazon also have these
incredible solar lanterns. Now, these are things that you might look at and then walk by in store
cuz you’re like, I don’t actually need that. Like, that’s not my style. But trust me, when these
lanterns turn on, the light just cascades over the surface and it gives such an incredible pattern.
These are actually worth it. I will be sure to link them for you. The cheapest place to get these
is definitely Dollar Tree, but you can find some pretty good deals on Amazon, too. And the light
that they give off is awesome on a porch. Now, we’re headed straight to Dollar Tree. They have so
many incredible lighting options now. And really, in the last year, they’ve added a lot more. Two
brand new finds in my store, cheaper than Amazon, were these solar post cap lights. They also come
in different colors, and these motion activated lights. They are great for stairs. Some of my
personal favorite are their lamp touch lights. I love to put these in cabinets. I love to put these
on tables. I recently made over a DIY coffee bar in a thrifted cabinet, and this was the perfect
addition. Did you know if you can’t find some of the touch lights at Dollar Tree, you can also
DIY your own using a Dollar Tree puck light. Grab a candlestick. Every thrift store has one of
these. And every thrift store has so many lamp shades. So many of them. I’m going to go through
and just do something a little bit like this. $1, they’re a dollar. This is the easiest DIY.
It’s going to make your house feel so cozy. Tabletop lamps are trending all over Instagram and
you don’t have to plug them in. They give a simple glow. So, I grabbed a puck light from Dollar
Tree and all you do is stick it inside this candlestick. Instant decor. This is one of those
cozy things you can put in any home and it’s going to look great. I want you to feel like you can do
anything in this video. And they also have motion activated lights which come on a magnet. You can
stick these on the inside of drawers. Now, if you’re having trouble finding some of these
things at Dollar Tree, I’ll be sure to link Amazon equivalents down below that are very
affordable. But right at that $7 price point, you really can’t beat it from Dollar Tree. There
are some really cool under cabinet lights from Amazon, though, that I’ve been using in lots of
recent projects. You can get a really big pack of them and underneath a sink or inside of a drawer
or even in a pantry. These are motion activated, so they conserve energy and they’re rechargeable.
And at the filming of this video, they are 37% off right now. I’ll be sure to link them below. I’ve
used them in so many recent projects. Whether you’re using these or the Dollar Tree ones, they
are great. When it comes to the $1.50 price point, we have got to talk about Dollar Tree solar
lights. Over the years, they’ve come out with some incredible solar lights. And everything
that you’re seeing on screen is back in store right now. I especially love the lantern looking
lights. They are so beautiful. And they even have glass solar lights with kind of this crackle bulb.
These are absolutely stunning and they keep adding more to store. But I think my personal favorite
are these flame glow lights. They’re easy to miss, but trust me, you want to look for them next time
you’re in store. They’re shipping a ton out for spring and summer. These remind me of Charleston.
Think those gorgeous lanterns by the road. When these are turned on, they are solar powered. It
looks like there’s a flame inside. And I found at Pottery Barn, urns were at least $50. This is
for a little 9 incher. Look how similar this $1.50 Dollar Tree version is. This one in particular
is so nice. Like it actually has a textured feel. So you could easily confuse this with stone. And
now we need to grab some greenery here. This one is really good. See how this looks realistic?
And I’m going to combine some of these and our urns outside. You don’t want to miss this hack.
It’s really good. Urn filler is expensive. Like so expensive. But we can make it all from Dollar
Tree. In my experience, in this size pot, four sprigs work perfectly well. Then add your solar
lantern inside and look at this beautiful glow. You’d never know it came from the dollar store.
Great lighting is the shortcut to an eclectic, romantic, and elevated look. I would love to
know which of these was your favorite. Or maybe which one was new to you, my beautiful friend.
If nobody has told you today, guess what? You are enough. I love you so much and I’ll see you
soon. All right, come here. Little light and love.
