Between work, family, and the general hustle of life in the Windy City, keeping your home spotless can feel like a full-time job. If you’re a busy Chicagoan dreaming of a tidy space but struggling to find the time, you’re not alone. Sometimes, the best gift you can give yourself is a clean slate—literally.

We all know the feeling. The holidays are a whirlwind of shopping, cooking, and celebrating. In the midst of the chaos, chores like laundry and dishes get pushed to the side. You promise yourself you’ll get to it later, but “later” often turns into a mountain of mess that dampens the post-holiday glow. What if you could change that?

My Annual December 23rd Ritual

I used to be the person who would wake up on December 26th surrounded by wrapping paper, leftover dishes, and a week’s worth of laundry. It was such a bummer after a beautiful day of celebration. That’s why I started a new tradition: giving myself the gift of a clean home every December 23rd.

This isn’t about a massive, all-day project. It’s a strategic, quick reset that makes all the difference. I commit to a few key tasks that set the stage for a peaceful holiday.

The Pre-Holiday Cleanup Checklist

My December 23rd ritual is simple, fast, and incredibly effective. Here’s what I focus on:

  • Tackle the Laundry: I run all the loads that have piled up. Coming home to clean, fresh sheets and empty hampers is a game-changer.
  • Quick Whole-House Tidy: I do a speed-run through the main living areas, putting away clutter, fluffing pillows, and clearing surfaces.
  • Sparkling Bathrooms: I give the bathrooms a quick but thorough wipe-down. A clean bathroom is non-negotiable for hosting or just enjoying your own space.
  • Kitchen Reset: I ensure no dishes are left in the sink and the counters are wiped clean. It makes Christmas morning coffee so much more enjoyable.

This routine means that after the presents are opened and the family has gone home, I’m left with a serene space, not a disaster zone. It’s the ultimate act of self-care during a busy season. If your schedule is too packed, consider booking a last-minute apartment cleaning to handle this reset for you.

Why a “Clean Slate” Matters for Busy People

Living in a bustling city like Chicago, our homes are our sanctuaries. When they’re cluttered and messy, it adds to our mental load. A pre-emptive tidy isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating calm and reclaiming your time to actually enjoy the moments that matter.

Whether it’s for the holidays, a busy work week, or just because, maintaining a clean home is easier with a plan. For those weeks when your to-do list is overflowing, reliable fast cleaning services can be a lifesaver, giving you back your weekend.

Make It a Year-Round Habit

You don’t need to wait for a holiday to give yourself this gift. Applying this “reset” logic to a regular Friday or before a busy week can transform your relationship with your home. The goal is consistency, not perfection.

If finding the time is the biggest hurdle, that’s where a trusted cleaning service near me comes in. A regular professional home cleaning can maintain that clean-slate feeling all year long. It’s one less thing on your mind, allowing you to focus on your life, not your laundry.

Usually I post a video today, but instead we’re both busy. Okay, I’m doing all these like little last minute things, but I wanted to share the most important thing I do every year on the 23rd besides those gifts and the extra wrapping I haven’t done yet. It’s give myself a Christmas gift. So the 23rd is the day where I catch up on laundry and I like run around and do a quick tidy and I make sure the bathrooms are clean because the worst thing I used to do this every year on Christmas after we rip open the presents and make a big mess. I would have a week’s worth of stuff because I was so busy I wouldn’t do the laundry and I wouldn’t tidy and sometimes even dishes left over and it was like such a bummer at the end of a beautiful day. So, I’ve committed the most important thing I do every year on the 23rd is tidy my home. Give myself the gift of a clean and tidy home for Christmas. I totally recommend it. And I’m going to see you back on the 26th. I have a really motivational video where we’re finding 26 things to declutter. But today, you know, we’re skipping it because we got things to do like give ourselves the most amazing Christmas gift ever. See you in a few days.
