It just becomes so overwhelming that it’s easier to just walk away from it. Hi, I’m Sabrina from Windsor. I am a mama to my little boy, John Michael, and wife to my husband, Evan. When we found out we were pregnant, we decided that we wanted to be a little bit closer to my family here in Windsor. When we made our move here, we kind of planned everything timing wise so that we would have a couple months to get everything set up in our new home before our little baby arrived. However, life ended up having other plans for us. Actually ended up getting admitted to the hospital on the day that we got our keys to this home. We didn’t get any time at all to set up before he was born and ended up moving in here straight from the hospital after spending about a month in the NICU. After coming home from the hospital, you know, you get that sense of relief that you’re home, but it didn’t really feel quite like home yet, just because there were just boxes everywhere. Walking in here does make me feel like a failure because I have these ideas of how I want my home to be. So, no wonder she’s looking at this space feeling overwhelmed and just shutting the door because she doesn’t have time to do it perfectly. And I really have to show her that good enough is better. That just getting it done today is the most important thing. She can always make it perfect later, but today she needs to just enjoy her home. We’re going to try sucking. I’m like, my goal for you is to like be bad at this and I want to show you like how that will just let go of all the expectations and get you the result you want. >> Okay. >> Okay. What’s the plan for this room? So, this room is supposed to be my husband’s office slash a room to kind of come and do like my little hobbies in as well. So, he works from home a couple of days a week. He does. >> We don’t really have a space for him to work, so he gets to work uh on the couch next to me and John Michael as well, >> like on his lap. Oh, okay. This is important. And you, what hobbies do you like to do? >> I like to use my hands and I like to paint and draw and >> So, this would be like a really important space for your whole family. Yeah, this always breaks my heart when I go to a client’s home and they’re exhausted. They are trying to be the best parent and wife and everything to everyone else and they’re putting themselves last. This space is so important because in the rest of the house, Sabrina is mom, but in this room, I want Sabrina to be able to just be Sabrina. This was This chair was my first purchase when I got like my career as a, you know, young adult. >> And where would you want this chair? in this room. If it worked in here, it could go in here. I’m starting to think that Sabrina’s dream room is actually right here. Like everything she loves, everything she wants to have in the room is in the room. It’s just buried under clutter. This is literally just a case of feeling like she doesn’t have enough time to do it perfectly. So, she’s not doing it at all. >> It will never wear again. So, we can donate it. This can go. I’m going to put a boundary on this room right now and say that it is for crafts and work like hobby, right? >> It is not for storing. >> Cass, you want to take your jacket out? >> Yeah, I do. I’ll stay a while. Woo! Another box. Oh, man. >> Yeah, that one’s broken. >> Can we just say goodbye to the whole box? >> We can. So, that’s like an Italian superstition. They like ward off like bad omen. I have to keep that like in a closet or something or my nona will get mad at me. >> We’re going to hide this. Don’t come for me. >> That’s our first kitty. Oh, is Kitty go in here? >> He could go in here. Yeah. >> Okay. Does it make you sad though? >> No, it doesn’t make me sad. He had a good life. And >> so would you want him in here or is it Would you rather him be in your memory bin? >> He could be in here. He was the cat that made me love cats. So >> Oh, he makes me >> Okay, let’s talk about sentimental clutter for a second. Especially when the item belongs to a loved one that has passed. So many times this turns into guilty clutter. this shameful thing that you don’t actually want to keep the item, but the person has passed away, so you feel you should. And that is a form of toxic clutter. But that’s not the case here, which is awesome. So, while you definitely should not hold on to those sentimental items that make you feel sad, so many times there are sentimental items that make you feel happy and those should not be buried in a box of clutter. They should have a place of honor. Hold your face. It has been an hour. That’s actually it. >> Yeah. >> That’s crazy. >> Is that not insane? Well, you couldn’t even walk in here. >> And how long was it full like this? >> A year and a half. >> A year and a half and 1 hour. >> Are you surprised? >> I am surprised. Yeah. >> Yeah. I feel like this is the power of just getting it done. So, if you have a room that’s like this, I would recommend setting a timer for 1 hour and then just making decisions on every single thing. You’re a rock star. >> Those are good kitchen towels. Those I’ll wash and use. >> Okay. You You have room in your kitchen drawers. >> I have like a bin in my linen closet that has just all of these kind of things >> where like you’re like, I got to dry dishes quick. I’m going to run upstairs. >> I know that’s a pain in the butt. >> You don’t have a spot for kitchen towels in your kitchen? What the >> I know what drawer I would want. >> Come on. Right now. Let’s go. >> A few moments later. >> What are these? >> That’s like an extra sheet that just needs to be washed and put away in the right spot. >> Okay. So, you have a linen closet for that? >> Eh. >> What do you mean? Eh, >> that linen closet upstairs is my only linen closet. >> I don’t remember seeing linens in your linen closet. >> I know. There’s like no linens. >> Where’s your linens? >> I keep towels downstairs on like a shelf down there. >> Look at me. >> I know it’s bad. >> Look at my face right now. You get out of the shower and you’re like, “Oh, I don’t have a clean.” You go all the way in the basement. I bring it up first. >> Drippy every time. Let’s go. Unacceptable. I broke my own rule during this makeover. I always say never leave the room. Stay where you are so you don’t get distracted. But about 10 times, I had side quests with Sabrina because we kept coming across things that were just five minute tasks that she had been procrastinating which were causing her hours of work. Not just having to run for a tea towel to dry dishes or having to go all the way to the basement when she wanted to have a shower, which is bonkers, but I found records that she loves to listen to, but she didn’t have the perfect spot for her records and record player. We found that in 2 minutes, which is crazy. We found a bag of change that had been just waiting for years to go to the bank. That’s a fiveinut trip that can instantly give you back money. There were so many side quests, but they were important. They were important to prove to Sabrina that in literally five minutes, embracing good enough, your entire life can be easier. And here’s where things got crazy. Okay, during all of these little side quests, I actually discovered another doom room. Seriously. And that became the ultimate side quest because we had decluttered Sabrina’s downstairs office craft room in under two hours even though I thought it should take eight, which left all day. And I was like, I’m going to help her. Let’s declutter this second Doom room, too. Let’s get in here and just spend an hour and make it better. What about these? So, those ones I bought some prints for this room that are all the same size. So, I was thinking of just spray painting those and using that to put the prints in cuz they’re kind of textured. >> Or you could just for now >> use this color and just leave it >> and then paint it late. Like embrace literally embrace it enough and then I know if it’s going to make your eye twitch, but you don’t have time. >> No, you’re right. While we were in here decluttering, it became very clear that while there were things to go, the majority of this stuff was just projects, to-dos, things Sabrina had to get to later when she could do it perfectly. So, I challenged her to just embrace good enough, to literally practice taking the things out of the boxes, not painting them, not making it perfect, and just doing it, doing her to-dos as quickly and as crappily as possible. Then, I had the most brilliantest, brilliant idea. While I’m surprising Sabrina by like organizing her space, what if she surprises me? What if in 2 weeks when I come back, this room is done good enough and I get to be the one who has the big reveal? We are done. >> Crazy. >> Crazy. That is the end of day one. We’re going to come back for day two and that’ll be all about organization. See you then. >> Working on these spaces, you know, that doesn’t change completely overnight where you just feel like everything’s perfect all of the sudden, but it’s definitely a work in progress. And I see that things take time and things don’t have to be done overnight and things don’t have to be perfect right away. But just working through things, it’s definitely a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I do feel proud of what we’ve accomplished and I’m excited to see what else I can do now that I know that I have this in me. >> Okay, day one of working on John Michael’s room. We got his big boy bed made. Got a couple little shelves in here. >> Got his little bookshelf made. Got a happy little guy. We’re getting there. Is this your big boy room? >> Yes. >> Yes. Are you so excited? >> No. >> Decluttering that space, I think, was what was causing me the most anxiety because I had the ideas for the room. I knew what I wanted to execute in the room, but there was just so much in the way and so much that had to be done before I could get to those steps of it that it was like daunting to think of all of that. So, once we got rid of everything and when I walked in there, it was like, “Oh, okay. just these things that are in here are actually staying in here now. So, I just have to figure out what to do with them. It was so much easier to just like focus on that task. So, the clutter aspect of it was definitely the more stressful part for sure. Your homework was basically like to do a crappy room upstairs to try to like take that perfectionist and just shove it down in a hole. How did it go? >> It went good. There’s more that I want to do to it, but uh >> I’m proud of you though. You’re like, “Oh, it’s killing me.” So, I did give you like a lot of homework cuz as we were going through, I’m like, “You got to go through this, right?” You were supposed to make a memory bin and there was like a bag of change. >> There was a bag of change. >> Tell me, you probably didn’t do all the homework. >> I didn’t do all the homework, but we did little pieces of it. >> Did you do the change? >> I did do the change. >> How much money? So, we got $380 and change plus the $200 bills plus probably like $200 or $300 of gift cards that I found. Also going through some more little memory boxes. >> Is that But is that like $700? >> Yeah. >> This is always happens during decluttering. You make money. Did you dump it into one of those machines? >> No, I didn’t actually. I >> You You didn’t roll it. Oh, for Pete’s sakes. Baby steps. Okay. Baby steps. We’re It’s okay. Those to-dos I’m going to get to later. That’s what’s crushing you. >> Mhm. >> It’s the expectations of I’m going to do it the right way later. And then you literally filled two rooms with that. >> I know. >> You know, of like I’m going to it’s got to be done a certain way. And if I really want you to embrace I’m going to do it perfect later, done today is more important because you’re babes, you’re busy. >> I know. And you deserve peace. I’m going to just say this is the fastest and easiest makeover because you have everything in the space. It was just buried under clutter. >> Mhm. >> 18 months of clutter. Is that what it was? >> 18 months of clutter. >> 18 months of clutter. Does it feel like a weight off your chest? >> It does. It’s a huge weight lifted. Okay. >> That’s the goal. >> Get the heck out of here. You’re going to come back and see this room. >> I’m so excited. >> Crooked. I’m going to cricify it. >> Oh, I love it. >> Little hint of ladybug cuz I don’t do cricket. Well, I’m going to be honest. I’m a little nervous. Not about anything other than organizing like a cricket. She doesn’t have a ton of stuff, but there is paperwork that I would like to cricketify her and like craft supplies. I have to get a little micro than I normally would because I don’t want Sabrina to redo things. I don’t want her to feel like this is a project. I want this to be done. But we have already moved some of the furniture. Actually, Mara already uh was moving around some of the furniture. Mara, if you haven’t met her, she helps out at Clutterbug and she’s going to be helping today. And she moved the desk into a spot in the middle of the room that I originally hated so much. Here’s why. I like symmetry. And I felt like it made the room smaller. But here’s the truth. Everything we discovered with Sabrina during the decluttering process was about her and her husband’s love for each other and how much they are just devoted. It’s gross almost the love, but this is their room together. So, what’s great is Sabrina can read in this chair and now see her husband and they can talk. So, moving the desk in this position makes this a connection place, not just a workplace. And I love that. So, I’m telling you because I want you to think about this in your own space, right? If you have an office, just relocating the desk like Mara did really create connection, not just a workspace. Okay, let’s get started. We’re going to start in one corner and start sweeping and putting this room together. Do you know what’s crazy, pants? I basically had to buy very little to make over this space because everything was here, which is nuts. But there was this incredible little cabinet which I think will be perfect here. And we’re going to zone this for craft supplies so that we can have a wrapping closet because gift wrapping is like really important to Sabrina, but so is crafts. So, we are going to I’m going to get Mara to help me pull this into place and then we’ll organize all the craft supplies into this cabinet. This actually is like fits like a glove, right? Some of the craft supplies are already in here. We’re going to just keep like zoning as we go. We’re going to get all the furniture into place and then we’ll do another sweep and cricify it. So, we’re going to start with like a crappy ladybug placement and then go back around and make it perfect. Let’s do this. >> A few moments later. >> I just realized we don’t have any other furniture to move. That was it. But we do have zoning to do when it comes to like this bookshelf. So, I’m going to have this be paperwork, office supplies, so that the closet can be dedicated to gift wrapping. And we got to keep the safe in there. So, a little zoning of this. Try to like make it organized. And then we’ll go back and make it beautiful. This is my hell. This is the thing that I hate. Micro sorting paperwork. As a ladybug, here’s how I file paperwork. Papers 2026. But when you cricify it, it’s about putting everything into lots of little categories and sorting from banking to investment to insurance. Not just regular insurance, but car and home insurance. Everything is super detailed. Somebody just suffocate me with a pillow. Okay, so now it’s time for the shelf. I did get some wicker baskets that are hidden because she is a cricket. And inside I’m going to microorganize things like all the cords and cables and the ugly stuff, you know, like the office supplies. And then when it’s on the shelf, it’ll just look like gorgeousness. Did I bring clip-on labels? No. So, I’m going to have to find a clever way of labeling these. But that’s okay. We’re embracing good enough today. We’re embracing good enough. This is all the office supplies. I might put some in the drawer. I’m going to wait. In the meantime, this is how you zone. You’re like office supplies good enough. Again, we can go through later and make it perfect later. We’re just we ladybug then we cricket. Taa. No. All of their special sentimental like loveydovey things. And there is a lot pictures and treasures from their travels. That’s what I want this to be. Yes, it has all their important documents, but more importantly, I want them to look at this and be instantly like reminded of their love. So Mara’s going to help me and we’re going to stage this so it is just beautiful and functional and almost romantic. So here’s my dilemma right now. Evan has a lot of hockey stuff which I find ugly. So I don’t want it to be out on display and plus it’s things like memorabilia. But this is the stuff they both really cherish and this is a room for both of them. which means I’m going to dedicate a whole shelf right here that’s at eye level for Evan with all of his favorite hockey things, the books and his jerseys. It’s not ideal because I wanted this whole entire closet to just be for gift wrap, but sometimes you have to compromise. This cabinet was such an amazing find. Not only does it match everything, but it was in the room to begin with, and it is the perfect size for craft supplies. I was actually surprised. Sabrina didn’t think she had a lot of craft supplies, but as we were gathering and finding, we were able to zone into all these dollar store bins. And I love that the cabinet inside is divided into four. So, we can have a section for tools, a section for paint, for like miscellaneous, and her current projects. This is so perfect. And I took just a few minutes to microorganize it for her so that it’s done. It’s perfect. And now she can just come in and actually enjoy the space instead of having one more to-do on her to-do list. Whenever I organize for a bee or a Cricut, I really have to go that extra mile to separate the markers from the paints, to separate the oil paint from the acrylic paint because that’s how their brain works in lots of little detailed categories. And if I was just to give one big category, that would be another to-do for Sabrina. she would feel the need to go back and make it perfect later. So, I’m just giving her perfect right now so she can come into this space and just enjoy it and not feel the pressure to make it better. The finishing touch is always labels. Even if you’re like, I don’t think I need labels. I’ll remember. Or if it’s a clear bin, trust me, labels are this magical thing that helps you like subconsciously put things away. They’re magic. Please try labeling. Joe hung these shelves. They look so good. Believe it or not, these were actually in the room. So, not having to spend any money and they match perfect. This is coming together. This is so special to both Sabrina and Evan. Sabrina had it made as a gift and it’s both of their childhood homes, like the cities they grew up in together on this beautiful custom art piece. So, it deserves a place of honor right here. So disappointing. We actually put the chair here and with the desk the way we wanted it, they can’t actually sit in the chair. I blame Mara. No, it’s my fault. Um, so we’re going to rotate it cuz if it’s facing this wall still like they can talk. We already hung the shelves, so it’s like it’s a little it’s a slight catastrophe, but not a big one. You feeling strong, Martha? >> Yeah, that’s good. >> Let’s Everybody cross the fingers. Everybody cross the fingers. >> Uh, >> it’s not bad. It’s the shelves should have been this way. Everything should have been this way. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. Not the end of the world because we can just center it on this wall and he has his back to her. And it’s sad, but it’s totally goes against all my whole thing, but that’s originally what I was going to do anyways. So, we’re just putting it back to the original. >> Let’s try it. I think this is the best of the worst, but let’s put the chair in. Okay, he can turn around when he wants to. >> Um, we can still do the bulletin board. It’s They can still get into the closet. Want to just push it right against the wall? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Well, there goes my love story, but it’s still pretty good. This room looks amazing. This lamp was just such a good find. It matches the one in the room exactly. But now it’s the perfect spot under her beautiful chair for a little reading nook. It’s coming together. So, it’s time for finishing touches. Just these little things to make it feel like home. And then we’re gonna bring her in and surprise Sabrina. I’ve done a lot of makeovers. I’ve helped a lot of clients over the years. This one stands out to me. Why? Because I barely had to buy anything at all. Everything in this room was already here. It was just buried under 18 months or maybe even longer of things she doesn’t use and things she doesn’t love and things that just needed to go to a good enough home. The whole time this room was here waiting for her. She just needed to say, “I’m going to fill a bag. I’m going to fill a donation box and I’m going to take 2 hours to make it happen.” And then we got this little cute thing. And this little cute thing. We got to hide it so Nona doesn’t come back to haunt us. This is one of my favorite ways to organize wrapping. If you have a closet, definitely like they have a little paper organizer here, which is perfect. But using dollar store curtain rods and just using them as tension for the ribbon and the paper, it’s gorgeous. It takes advantage of that vertical space that otherwise would be wasted. And you just roll it out and cut the piece you need, so it’s functional, too. I’m like, I’m kind of in love with this closet. I hope Sabrina likes it, too. Their little love nest is done. It’s time to bring Sabrina in and surprise her. Are you ready? Let’s go. >> Okay. Keep your eyes closed. >> They’re closed. I feel like it’s like peaceful and it 100% the opposite of the stress that it brought me when we started this. I’m just like overwhelmed with a sense of calm. It’s like a zen zone. It’s peace. It’s it’s where I want to be. It’s where I can come to like turn my brain off. Couldn’t have imagined it any better than it is now truly. It’s stunning. >> You said when I first came that you felt like a failure because of these two rooms. >> I did. >> In 2 weeks, they’re both completely transformed. How do you feel? >> It honestly I don’t know if it feels really like it hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s overwhelming in like the best way. I’m I’m so proud of what’s been accomplished here and I feel like it’s like the world has been like lifted off of my shoulders and I can’t wait to just like actually like enjoy these spaces. I hope you at home are feeling like so inspired, especially crickets and bees. the procrastination like you had so much pressure and expectations that you were like I’m not even going to do it till I can do it right and you just were like I’m going to do it and it’s turned out perfect anyways like what do you have advice for people at home who tend to like put things off or feel overwhelmed and not get started do you have advice >> yeah like I’ve learned so much from this experience and I think looking at it all as like one big picture can be so scary sometimes cuz you look at it and you see so many like little individual tasks that have to be done and it’s easier to just walk away or save it for another day where you think you can do all of that at once. And I think just like taking it one little step at a time and you know focusing on one little goal and then you know hang something on the wall one day and then revisit something else the next day and then one thing at a time it it comes together and it’s it’s an amazing feeling. >> And if I could do it, you guys can all do it. So >> 18 months you have had a home that didn’t feel that you didn’t feel was finished. Mhm. >> And now every room looks gorgeous. >> You did so good. I’m I’m a little bit competitive and you did a better job than I did. You did. You took it to the next level because of course you did. But I’m just so proud of you. When I came, I thought we would just do one room. >> And it was actually like so rewarding to just encourage you to do and surprise me. And I think that’s the thing that’s maybe missing sometimes when I go to a client’s home and do it for them. They’re not empowered. But I could feel you’re like >> I felt good. >> Yeah. Like she’s empowered. She does not need a professional. >> No, I did. >> No, she didn’t. In fact, she did a better job than I did. People watch this like, “Cass, I wish you could come.” And the truth is, you don’t need me. You need to roll up your sleeves and put things in a trash bag one at a time. >> One at a time. >> I hope you’re feeling so inspired. I do think this is one of the most relatable and inspiring makeovers I’ve ever done because I see this all the time that people are living under the burden of clutter and mess and all these broken promises to themselves. They feel overwhelmed when in reality all they need to do is say, “Today is the day I’m going to take action. That progress is better than perfection. That I’m going to make mistakes. that I’m going to allow myself to suck a little bit, but at least it’s done. And look at how gorgeous this turned out. I just finished my chapter on do it shitty specifically for health and fitness, which I’m really nervous about because I’m not great at health and fitness, but I want to include it because it’s important that we also, you know, get it done there. So, then I was like, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is. I’m going to actually do the thing I’m suggesting. And I thought of what’s the crappiest crappiest way that I could exercise. And I want to exercise every day. I want to be a person who exercises daily, but I don’t want to move. And I don’t want to sweat. And I don’t actually want any kind of physical like what would that look like? You know what it looks like? Rebounder. Yep. I bought myself a mini trampoline and every day consistently here’s what I’m doing. I’m getting on it and I’m just jiggling slightly for about 10 minutes. It’s a slight jiggle. It’s actually really fun. Do I feel any No. No. I’m not moving enough. But guess what? It counts. It counts because I’m actually like exercising every day. And this is why I like I’m not exercising in the exercise way. But here’s what’s happening. I’m telling myself I’m a person who exercises every day. And something is changing in my brain because yesterday I picked up two 5 lb weights while I jiggled a little bit. And then I was like, what else can I do? Maybe I can bounce a little higher. Like it’s changing the way I think about fitness because I allowed myself to suck so hard at it. Guys, this is working. I work out every day. I’m a person who works out daily. Yeah. Doesn’t matter that it’s crappy. It’s a side note. Give it a try. Maybe not the rebounder, but like really lower your standards to the floor and then just slowly step over the bar.
